About Mt. Vernon

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief to bear.  What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. Let the enemies be scattered and let God arise.

For 99 years, this church has stood the test of time through storms, fires, highs, lows, eight pastors, and numerous other changes.  Yet, as the oldest church in this Sunnyside community, we still stand as a light in a dark world. Our history speaks for itself.

  • This church was started in the oldest school in the neighborhood, Sunnyside Elementary School in 1920 under the principal for whom it is now named, Ms. Ethel Young.
  • This church was started with nine charter members, of who Sis. Della Gibbs was instrumental in giving our church her name.
  • Baptisms for this church during that time were done in Sims Bayou off of North MacGregor.
  • In 1941, an earlier church building was damaged by a storm and blown from the blocks.
  • In 1953, under the leadership of the late Rev. J.W. Marshall who served for 50 years, the church building was torn down, and construction of the next church building began and was completed in 1955.
  • Upon his death in 1989, Kenneth K. Rose, Jr. was called to pastor, and we’ve been moving by leaps and bounds for 30 years.  Construction for a new facility was begun in 2004 financed through bonds from Great Nation, Inc. The then current church building remained as our place of worship until was destroyed by an electrical fire on Sunday, August 21, 2005, following our 11:00 A.M. service.  At that time, the construction of our new facility was only 75% completed. However, by the grace of God and through the help of members, friends, and our contractor, Niyi Ero-Phillips of Continental Builders & Developer, Inc. we held our first service in our new facility on the following Sunday, August 28, 2005.

From remodeling and renovations that were done in the old sanctuary to the building, we are now housed, internal and external improvements have been made and we continue to press forward in the name of Christ always thanking God for His Faithfulness.
